Signs Your Chicken Coop Needs More Ventilation (and How to Fix It Without a Draft)

New chicken keepers almost always solve the wrong problem in winter. Birds seem cold, the coop smells sharp and unpleasant in the morning, and combs look damaged after a cold snap โ€” so the instinct is to seal every gap and add heat. That instinct is usually backward. Most winter coop problems aren't caused by too little heat; they're caused by too little airflow. Moisture and ammonia build up inside a sealed coop faster than most keepers expect, and that trapped moisture does more damage to a flock than cold air ever does.

Ventilation and Draft Are Not the Same Thing

This is the single most important distinction in coop design, and it's the one that trips up almost everyone starting out. A draft is air movement at bird level โ€” a gap low on a wall that sends a cold stream directly across roosting birds. That genuinely can chill a flock and should be closed. Ventilation is air exchange up high, above the birds' heads, that lets warm, moist, ammonia-laden air escape as it rises, while fresh air is pulled in to replace it. Closing off drafts is correct. Closing off ventilation is the mistake, and it's an easy one to make because both look, from the outside, like "a hole letting cold air in."

Chickens generate a surprising amount of moisture just by breathing and through their droppings โ€” a single hen produces roughly a cup of manure a day, and that manure is wet. In an unventilated coop overnight, that moisture has nowhere to go. It condenses on cold surfaces, soaks into bedding, and mixes with ammonia from the droppings to create the sharp smell that hits you when you open the coop door in the morning.

Sign One: Ammonia Smell First Thing in the Morning

If opening the coop door produces a smell strong enough to sting your eyes or make you cough, that's not normal, and it's not something to just get used to. A well-ventilated coop should smell like a barn, not an animal-testing lab. That ammonia is coming off wet droppings that have been sitting in still, damp air overnight. Chickens breathe that air for hours at a time, and ammonia at levels a human barely notices is already irritating their respiratory tissue, which makes them more vulnerable to actual respiratory infections. If you notice the smell, treat it as an early warning rather than waiting for a bird to get visibly sick.

Sign Two: Frostbite on Combs and Wattles, Even in a "Warm" Coop

This one confuses people the most, because it seems to argue for more heat, not more airflow. But frostbite in a coop is almost always a humidity problem, not strictly a temperature problem. Dry cold air at ten degrees Fahrenheit causes far less frostbite damage than damp air at twenty-five degrees, because moisture sitting on a comb conducts heat away from the tissue much faster than dry air does. A coop with poor ventilation traps that moisture right at bird height overnight, so the birds are essentially sleeping in a slightly damp fog, and their combs pay the price. Improving airflow โ€” even though it feels counterintuitive in freezing weather โ€” is usually the actual fix for recurring frostbite, alongside choosing cold-hardy breeds with smaller combs if frostbite is a recurring issue in your climate.

Sign Three: Wet, Caked, or Frozen-Solid Bedding

Bedding should stay reasonably dry between cleanings, absorbing droppings without turning into a solid, matted layer. If you're finding bedding that's damp to the touch, has visible condensation underneath it, or freezes into a solid sheet in cold weather, moisture is building up faster than it's escaping. This is the same root cause as the ammonia smell and the frostbite โ€” trapped humidity โ€” just showing up as a different symptom. Deep litter method coops, which rely on a thick, actively composting bedding layer, are particularly prone to this if ventilation isn't sized for the moisture the composting process itself generates.

Sign Four: Visible Condensation or Frost Inside the Coop

On a cold morning, look at the inside of the roof and the tops of the walls before you open the door and let warm human breath fog things up further. Frost or beaded condensation on the ceiling or upper walls is moist air meeting a cold surface and losing the fight โ€” it's the clearest physical evidence you'll get that humid air isn't escaping. Wood that stays damp this way over a season will also start to rot and mold, which shortens the life of the coop itself, so this sign is worth acting on for the structure's sake as well as the birds'.

The Fix: Vents High, Roosts Low, No Direct Draft

The standard, low-cost fix is to add or open ventilation near the ridge or top of the walls โ€” well above where birds roost โ€” while keeping any lower-level gaps sealed against direct draft. A common approach is a continuous gap under the roof overhang on at least two sides of the coop, sized roughly to one square foot of vent opening per ten square feet of coop floor as a starting point, adjusted up in humid climates and down in very dry ones. Ridge vents, gable vents, or simply hardware-cloth-covered openings just under the roofline all accomplish the same goal: warm, moist air rises and exits before it has a chance to settle back down onto the roosting bar.

If you're retrofitting an existing coop rather than building new, the cheapest fix is often to cut one or two vent openings high on the gable ends and cover them with quarter-inch hardware cloth to keep out predators and rodents. This can typically be done in an afternoon with a jigsaw and doesn't require touching the lower walls at all, which means you're not introducing any new draft risk while you solve the ventilation problem.

Bedding Choices That Support Better Ventilation

Bedding material interacts with ventilation more than most new keepers expect, and choosing well can meaningfully ease the burden on whatever airflow your coop already has. Pine shavings and straw both absorb moisture reasonably well, but straw tends to mat down into a dense layer faster than shavings do, which can trap moisture underneath even when the surface looks dry. Hemp bedding and coarser wood shavings generally outperform straw specifically because their structure stays looser longer, allowing air to keep moving through the litter layer itself rather than just across the top of it. Whatever bedding you choose, stirring or turning it every few days breaks up any surface crusting and exposes damp lower layers to the drier air above, which meaningfully reduces the ammonia buildup that would otherwise force your ventilation system to work harder than it needs to.

What About Adding Heat Instead?

It's tempting to reach for a heat lamp or heater when birds look cold, but heat sources in a coop introduce a serious fire risk, especially in bedding-heavy environments, and they don't solve the underlying moisture problem โ€” they can actually make it worse by adding more warm surfaces for condensation to form on nearby cold ones. Most standard cold-hardy breeds handle temperatures well below freezing without supplemental heat, provided they're dry, out of direct wind, and have enough flock mates to huddle with on the roost. If birds seem to be struggling in cold weather despite dry bedding and no drafts, that's worth investigating as a health or nutrition issue rather than reaching for a heat lamp as the first response.

A Quick Reference for Diagnosing Coop Air Quality

Because these signs tend to show up gradually rather than all at once, it helps to run through them deliberately every couple of weeks during the coldest months rather than waiting for a problem to become obvious. Step into the coop first thing in the morning before opening any windows or doors, and take a moment before your own breath and movement change the air. Note whether the smell is mild and earthy or sharp enough to notice immediately. Run a hand across the bedding surface and, if possible, an inch or two beneath it, checking for dampness rather than just visual dryness, since a dry-looking surface can still hide a damp layer underneath. Glance at the ceiling and the tops of the walls for frost or beading before the coop warms up during the day and any overnight condensation evaporates or reabsorbs. Taken together, these few seconds of morning observation, repeated regularly through winter, catch ventilation problems early, while they're still a quick vent adjustment away from being fixed, rather than after a flock has already developed frostbite or a respiratory issue that takes much longer to resolve.

Checking Your Fix Worked

Give any ventilation change about a week, through at least one cold night, before judging it. Then repeat the morning smell test and check the ceiling for condensation again. A properly ventilated coop should smell mild, bedding should stay dry to the touch even after several days without cleaning, and you shouldn't see frost or beading on interior surfaces. If ammonia smell persists after adding ventilation, the issue is more likely bedding management โ€” cleaning frequency or bedding depth โ€” than airflow, and the two problems are worth troubleshooting separately once ventilation itself is confirmed adequate.

Sizing Ventilation for Different Coop Styles

A small, well-insulated coop housing four or five birds needs proportionally less vent area than a larger, thinner-walled coop housing twenty, but the relationship isn't perfectly linear, because a small coop also has less air volume to dilute the moisture those same birds produce. As a practical adjustment to the one-square-foot-per-ten-square-feet starting guideline, small coops in humid climates often do better closer to one square foot of vent per six or seven square feet of floor, while larger coops in dry climates can sometimes get away with less than the standard guideline suggests. Rather than treating any single ratio as a fixed rule, use the diagnostic signs โ€” morning smell, ceiling condensation, bedding dampness โ€” as the actual measure of whether your specific coop has enough ventilation, and adjust vent size up gradually if those signs persist after an initial fix.

Seasonal Adjustments Rather Than a Fixed Setup

Ventilation needs shift meaningfully between summer and winter, and a coop set up correctly for a mild fall can become under-ventilated once birds are spending more consecutive hours inside during the shortest, coldest days, or over-ventilated and genuinely drafty during a summer heat wave if winter-appropriate vent covers are still in place. Many keepers build adjustable vent covers โ€” a simple hinged board or a piece of removable hardware-cloth-backed plywood โ€” over their high vents specifically so coverage can be reduced slightly during the harshest cold snaps without sealing the vent completely, then opened back up as temperatures moderate. The goal through all of this stays the same regardless of season: keep airflow moving above the birds' heads even when everything else about the coop's management is adjusting for temperature, since moisture buildup is a year-round risk even though it's most dangerous in winter when it combines with cold to cause frostbite.
